Living templeNagara (North Indian)Hemadpanti (Deccan)ASI Monument of National Importance

A 12th-century temple of Vishnu as slayer of the demon Lonasura, in the town beside the Lonar crater, a lake formed by a meteor impact. Many smaller temples stand around the crater rim and inside it.

HistoryDocumented history

The Lonar crater, about 1.2 km across, was formed by a meteorite tens of thousands of years ago and holds a salty, alkaline lake. The Daitya Sudan temple in the town has carvings in the style of Khajuraho and the Deccan. Around the crater are the ruins of dozens of temples.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The demon Lonasura terrorised the land, and Vishnu, in the form of a handsome youth, found him hiding in a cave below the earth. Vishnu lifted the lid of the cave, which became the crater, and killed him. The town takes his name.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The perennial spring at the Dhar temple on the crater's edge is said to be the Ganga, flowing to wash the demon's blood away.

PhilosophyInterpretation

A god who strikes from the sky and a lake made by a falling star make Lonar a place where myth and natural history meet.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Lonar was declared a Ramsar wetland site in 2020, and the lake's sudden change to pink that year drew scientists and visitors.
