An Ashtavinayak shrine of Ganesha as Chintamani, 'the wish-fulfilling jewel'. It was the favourite of the Peshwa Madhavrao I, who died here in 1772.

HistoryDocumented history

Theur lies close to Pune and was a retreat of the Peshwas. Madhavrao I, who restored Maratha power after Panipat, came here when ill and died at the temple; a memorial to Ramabai stands nearby.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Prince Gana stole the Chintamani jewel from the sage Kapila. Ganesha fought Gana, won back the jewel and returned it, but Kapila placed it around the god's neck, and Ganesha became Chintamani.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The lake near the temple is called Kadamb Tirth, after the tree under which the god defeated Gana. Devotees believe Chintamani removes worry (chinta).

PhilosophyInterpretation

The jewel that grants every wish is, in the end, the god himself: the mind at peace needs nothing more.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Theur's closeness to Pune makes it a weekend pilgrimage, and its Peshwa memories tie the shrine to the city's history.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
