A hilltop temple of Vishnu as Cheluvanarayana, where the philosopher Ramanuja lived for about twelve years. Its Vairamudi festival, when the god wears a diamond crown from the Mysore palace, draws huge crowds.

HistoryDocumented history

Ramanuja came to Karnataka escaping a Chola king hostile to Vaishnavas, and the Hoysala ruler Bittideva, who took the name Vishnuvardhana, became his patron. At Melukote he set up the temple's rituals and opened it on festival days to people outside the castes, whom he called Tirukulattar. The town remains a centre of Sri Vaishnava learning.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The festival image, Selvapillai (Ramapriya), had been carried off to Delhi. Ramanuja went there and found that the sultan's daughter loved the image and played with it as a doll; it came to his call. The princess followed it south, and is worshipped as Bibi Nachiyar, a consort of the god.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The Vairamudi crown is kept in the Mysore palace treasury and brought to Melukote under guard once a year. Tradition says the priests put it on the god with closed eyes, as no human may see its full splendour.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Ramanuja's Vishishtadvaita sees the world and souls as the body of God: real, distinct and yet inseparable from him. His opening of the temple to the excluded put that teaching into practice.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Bibi Nachiyar's shrine and the Tirukulattar story are a reminder of shared and inclusive pasts. The Academy of Sanskrit Research at Melukote works on manuscripts and traditional knowledge.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
