The town lies on the suburban railway west of Chennai. Thirumangai Alvar sang of the god, and the temple is busy with visitors from the city.

Lakshmi, after a quarrel in Vaikuntha, came to earth and stood here; Vishnu followed and stayed with her. The goddess is called Ennaipetra Thayar, 'the mother who bore me', a name said to have been given by the sea god.
