HistoryDocumented history
Ahmedabad was founded in 1411 by Ahmad Shah I, and the Bhadra fort was its royal citadel. The fort takes its name from the goddess Bhadra, worshipped in the area since before the city. The present shrine is small but central to the city's festivals.

Lakshmi came to the gate of the fort one night, intending to leave the city. The guard, Siddique Kotwal, asked her to wait while he took the king's permission, and then cut off his own head so that he could never return. Bound by her promise, Lakshmi stays in Ahmedabad.

Tradition
