Living temple

A temple of Krishna on the island of Bet Dwarka, held to be his residence while Dwarka was his court. The island, reached by ferry and since 2024 by a cable-stayed bridge, has also yielded remains of a Late Harappan settlement.

HistoryDocumented history

Bet Dwarka, or Shankhodhar, is a small island in the Gulf of Kutch. The temple complex is a walled palace-like group of shrines of Krishna and his queens, kept by priests of the Pushti Marg. Pilgrims visiting Dwarka cross to the island to complete the darshan.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Krishna lived here with his queens. His poor childhood friend Sudama came with only a handful of rice, and Krishna received him with joy and made him rich without his asking.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Pilgrims offer rice here in memory of Sudama's gift. The name Bet ('island' or 'gift') is linked by some to the meeting of the two friends.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The rich king who eats the beggar's rice teaches that love, not the size of the gift, is what God values.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Excavations at Bet Dwarka are central to research on early ports of the Gujarat coast, and the new bridge has made the island a much larger pilgrim destination.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
