The temple of Baba Baidyanath in Deoghar, Jharkhand, widely regarded as the Vaidyanath Jyotirlinga, with 21 other temples in its compound. In the month of Shravan, millions of pilgrims (kanwariyas) carry Ganga water about 100 km on foot from Sultanganj to offer here. Parli Vaijnath in Maharashtra also claims this Jyotirlinga.
HistoryDocumented history
Deoghar ('home of the gods') is mentioned as a healing place in the Puranas. The temple's priests and the Gidhaur rulers shaped its institutions, and the Shravani Mela, a month-long pilgrimage on foot from the Ganga at Sultanganj, has become one of the largest gatherings in eastern India.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Ravana did penance in the Himalaya and asked Shiva for a linga to take to Lanka, on the condition that it must never be set down on the way. The gods, alarmed, had Varuna enter Ravana's body so that he urgently needed to stop. Ravana handed the linga to a passing herdsman, Baiju, who set it on the ground. Ravana could not lift it again and pressed his thumb into it in anger, and the gods then worshipped the linga here.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
The herdsman Baiju is remembered in the name Baidyanath. Tradition also counts Deoghar among the Shakti Peethas as the place where Sati's heart fell, which is why the shrines of Shiva and Parvati here are tied together with sacred thread.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Vaidyanath means 'lord of physicians': Shiva as the healer of body and mind. The kanwariyas' barefoot journey with Ganga water is devotion expressed through physical endurance.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The Shravani Mela is a vast feat of public management, with millions of pilgrims along a 100 km route. Its scale raises the same questions of safety, health and sanitation faced by every mass pilgrimage in India.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
