Four cave temples cut into a red sandstone cliff at Vatapi, the Chalukya capital: one for Shiva, two for Vishnu and one Jain. Cave 3, dated 578, is one of the earliest dated Hindu cave temples in India.
HistoryDocumented history
Pulakeshin I made Vatapi his capital in the 6th century, and his sons Kirtivarman I and Mangalesha had the caves carved. Each has a pillared verandah, a hall and a small sanctum. The sculpted panels, with Vishnu as Trivikrama, Varaha and seated on Adishesha, and Shiva dancing with eighteen arms, are landmarks of early Indian art.
Sthala PuranaTradition
The sage Agastya is said to have killed the demon brothers Vatapi and Ilvala here: Ilvala would cook his brother and serve him to guests, then call him out of their bellies, until Agastya digested him. The town and the lake are named after the two.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
A carved Harihara, half Shiva and half Vishnu, and an Ardhanarishvara, half Shiva and half Parvati, stand in Cave 1, and guides point to the bull and elephant that share one head on its ceiling.
PhilosophyInterpretation
Shaiva, Vaishnava and Jain caves cut in one cliff by the same dynasty show a court that honoured several paths at once.
Meaning todayInterpretation
Badami is a centre for rock climbing as well as heritage, and the caves are a key stop on the Badami-Aihole-Pattadakal circuit that traces the early history of the Indian temple.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
