A 13th-century Seuna Yadava temple in Hemadpanti style, considered by many to be the Nageshwar Jyotirlinga named in Adi Shankara's Jyotirlinga hymn. Damaged by Sultanate invasions, its upper part was rebuilt later, traditionally by Ahilyabai Holkar.
HistoryDocumented history
The richly carved base of the temple is one of the finest surviving works of the Yadava period, when the minister Hemadri gave his name to the Hemadpanti style. Its claim to be a Jyotirlinga rests on the hymn's reference to 'Nagesham Darukavane', read by some as Aundha.
Sthala PuranaTradition
Legend says Yudhishthira built the first temple here while the Pandavas were in exile.
Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore
When the Varkari saint Namdev (c. 1270-1350) sang devotional songs in front of the temple, the priests sent him round to the back. As he kept singing, the temple is said to have turned so its door faced him, which is why the Nandi stands behind the shrine.
PhilosophyInterpretation
The Namdev story places the sincere devotee above ritual hierarchy, a central teaching of Maharashtra's Bhakti movement.
Meaning todayInterpretation
The story of the turning temple is still told in Maharashtra as a lesson against exclusion in worship.
Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation

Documented history
Tradition
Tradition and folklore
Interpretation
Interpretation
