HistoryDocumented history
The Augharnath temple stands in the Meerut cantonment. It is also called the Kali Paltan Mandir, after the Indian regiments (the 'black' platoons, in the language of the time) whose lines were nearby. Tradition says the linga here is self-manifest.
The uprising of 1857 began at Meerut on 10 May. Accounts say a holy man at the temple told the sepoys that the new rifle cartridges were greased with animal fat, that a priest refused them water from the temple well because they had bitten the cartridges, and that the soldiers met here before the rising. These accounts come from later tradition and are hard to confirm, but the temple is firmly part of Meerut's memory of 1857.
The old shrine was later replaced by the present temple, and a martyrs' memorial was added in its grounds. The old well is kept.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The present temple is a modern building with a white spire, in grounds that also hold the old well and the martyrs' memorial.

Documented history
