One of the largest temples in India, at the foot of Arunachala hill, where Shiva is worshipped as fire (Agni Lingam). Each year at Karthigai Deepam a great flame is lit on the hilltop. Pilgrims walk the 14 km path around the hill, and the sage Ramana Maharshi lived here.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple covers about 10 ha, with four great gateway towers and five enclosures. Inscriptions of the Cholas, Hoysalas, Vijayanagara kings and Nayakas record its growth over seven centuries. The eastern Raja Gopuram, about 66 m high in eleven storeys, is among the tallest in India. In 1896 the sixteen-year-old Ramana arrived here and meditated in the underground Patala Lingam shrine before moving to the hill, and his presence made Tiruvannamalai known worldwide.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Brahma and Vishnu argued over who was greater. Shiva appeared between them as an endless pillar of fire and challenged them to find its ends. Vishnu, as a boar, dug down and could not find the base; Brahma, as a swan, flew up and falsely claimed to have seen the top. The pillar of fire became the hill Arunachala, and the Karthigai Deepam flame recalls it.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Parvati is said to have performed penance here and become one with Shiva as Ardhanarishvara, half male and half female. Many siddhas are believed to live on the hill even now, and walking around it barefoot, called girivalam, is said to grant liberation.

PhilosophyInterpretation

In this tradition the hill itself is Shiva. Ramana taught here that the self is pure awareness, found by asking 'Who am I?'; the endless pillar of fire is a picture of that awareness, without beginning or end.

Meaning todayInterpretation

On every full moon hundreds of thousands walk the girivalam path, and the Karthigai Deepam draws millions. Ramana's teaching has made Tiruvannamalai a centre for seekers from around the world.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
