సూర్యనారాయణ స్వామి ఆలయం, అరసవల్లి

One of the few temples in India where the Sun is worshipped in daily puja. Twice a year the rising sun shines through the gate straight onto the feet of the image.

HistoryDocumented history

Sun worship was strong on the Kalinga coast, and Arasavalli is its main living centre in Andhra. The black granite image shows Surya holding lotuses, in a chariot with seven horses and the charioteer Aruna. The gate is aligned so that the sun's first rays touch the image in March and October.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Indra, stopped by Nandi from entering a Shiva temple, was thrown down; he prayed to Surya, who healed him, and Indra installed this image in thanks. The tank before the temple, Indra Pushkarini, is said to have been dug with his thunderbolt.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Pilgrims bathe on Ratha Saptami at dawn with arka (calotropis) leaves on their heads, believed to cure skin and eye diseases.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The Sun is the visible god (pratyaksha daivam), the source of life and time; worship at dawn joins a natural fact with devotion.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The solar alignment draws students of archaeo-astronomy, and Ratha Saptami makes it a festival hub for north coastal Andhra.
