The birthplace of Andal, the only woman among the twelve Alvars, who wrote the Thiruppavai and is said to have married Vishnu. The temple has two parts: her shrine, and the shrine of Vishnu lying on a banyan leaf. Its gopuram, about 59 m high, appears on the emblem of the Tamil Nadu government.

HistoryDocumented history

Srivilliputhur grew around the shrine of Vatapatrasayee, Vishnu lying on a banyan leaf, and the later shrine of Andal. The great tower, about 59 m high in eleven tiers, is one of the tallest in Tamil Nadu and is shown on the state emblem. Pandya and Nayaka kings endowed the temple, and its Aadi Pooram chariot is among the largest in the state.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Periyalvar, a priest who made garlands for Vishnu, found a baby girl under a tulasi plant in his garden and named her Kodhai. As a girl she secretly wore the god's garlands before they were offered. When her father found out he was upset, but Vishnu told him in a dream that he wanted only the garlands she had worn. She was taken to Srirangam as a bride and merged into the image of Ranganatha.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Andal's garland is still sent each year to Tirumala for the Brahmotsavam and to Madurai for Kallalagar's Chithirai festival. Her parrot, which she is shown holding, is made fresh each day from leaves.

PhilosophyInterpretation

Andal's Thiruppavai, sung each morning of Margazhi across the Tamil world, imagines the devotee as a cowherd girl waking her friends to go to Krishna. It teaches devotion as love, joy and service rather than fear.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The 30 verses of the Thiruppavai are among the most widely sung Tamil poems, at home, in temples and on radio every Margazhi. Andal is celebrated as a woman poet who chose her own path to God.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
