HistoryDocumented history

The Shilaharas ruled the north Konkan from Thane and Puri. The temple's sanctum lies below ground level and is reached by steps. The upper part of the tower is lost, but the walls are crowded with sculpture of Shiva, Durga, dancers and guardians.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Local tradition says the Pandavas built the temple in a single night during their exile; the inscription shows it to be a Shilahara foundation.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The sanctum is said to have a passage that runs far underground, and a warm spring inside is shown to visitors.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The descent into the sanctum enacts the inward turn of worship: going down into the self to meet Shiva.
