A Krishna temple built by the rulers of Chembakassery, where the deity holds a whip and conch like Parthasarathy, Arjuna's charioteer. It is famous for its palpayasam, a rice and milk pudding that Guruvayurappan is believed to come and taste each day, and it sheltered the Guruvayur image during Tipu Sultan's invasion.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple was the state temple of the small kingdom of Chembakassery, later absorbed into Travancore. It counts among the 108 Abhimana Kshetrams of the Vaishnava tradition. The poet Kunchan Nambiar, creator of the satirical Ottan Thullal dance, lived and died at Ambalappuzha, and local tradition places the birth of Thullal at this temple.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Krishna came to the king as a sage and challenged him to chess. The prize he asked for was one grain of rice on the first square, doubling on every square after. The king lost and found all his granaries could not pay. The sage revealed himself and allowed the debt to be paid over time, by serving palpayasam to pilgrims every day.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

Guruvayurappan is believed to visit daily at the time of the palpayasam offering. Another story says the idol was installed after the first one proved unfit, and a Krishna image was brought from the Karinkulam temple at Kurichi, an event still recalled in the Chambakkulam boat race.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The chess story turns a lesson in mathematics into one about pride: no king can repay what the divine gives, but daily service can. The whip and conch show Krishna as guide and teacher, as he was to Arjuna.

Meaning todayInterpretation

The palpayasam remains one of Kerala's best-known temple offerings, and the Chambakkulam Moolam boat race, linked to the temple, opens Kerala's boat-race season.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
