The remains of a great Buddhist stupa at Amaravathi on the Krishna, built from the 3rd century BCE and enlarged up to the 3rd century CE. Its carved limestone panels, now mostly in museums in Chennai, London and at the site, are among the finest early Indian sculpture.

HistoryDocumented history

Only the base of the stupa remains. Many panels were taken to Madras and to the British Museum in the 19th century. They show the Buddha's life, often with the Buddha as a symbol rather than a figure, and scenes of court and town life.
