The first of the five Pancharama temples, where pieces of a single linga are worshipped. The linga here is about 4.5 m tall and rises through two floors. The town was earlier the great Buddhist centre of Dhanyakataka.

HistoryDocumented history

Amaravathi was Dhanyakataka, capital of the Satavahanas and site of the great Buddhist stupa, whose carvings are now in museums in Chennai, London and Amaravathi. The Shiva temple became the town's centre in the medieval period, and the name Amaravathi was later chosen for Andhra Pradesh's new capital.

Sthala PuranaTradition

The demon Tarakasura wore a linga around his neck that made him invincible. Kartikeya shattered it with his spear, and the pieces fell at five places; the gods installed them as the Pancharamas. Indra installed the piece at Amaravathi, which is why it is called Amararama, the garden of the immortals.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The linga is said to have kept growing until a nail was driven into its top to stop it; a red mark on it is shown as the place.

PhilosophyInterpretation

One linga in five places shows that the divine is undivided even when it appears in many shrines.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Amaravathi links Buddhist and Hindu pasts in one town, and its name now stands for a new state capital.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
