Living templeDravida (South Indian)CholaUNESCO World Heritage Site (part of)ASI Monument of National Importance

A Chola temple of the 12th century, built by Rajaraja II, smaller than Thanjavur but crowded with fine carving. Its front hall is shaped like a chariot drawn by horses, with stone wheels. It is part of the UNESCO site 'Great Living Chola Temples'.

HistoryDocumented history

Rajaraja II built the temple near the Chola secondary capital of Pazhaiyarai. The vimana is about 24 m high, and the whole building is covered in carving: dancers, musicians, scenes of the lives of the 63 Nayanmar saints, and small panels only a few centimetres high. The front hall, the Raja Gambhira mandapa, is designed as a chariot with wheels and horses. Unlike Thanjavur and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the temple is mainly a monument now, with modest daily worship.

Sthala PuranaTradition

Airavata, the white elephant of Indra, lost his colour under a sage's curse. He bathed in the temple tank and worshipped Shiva here, and his whiteness returned. Yama, the god of death, is also said to have bathed here to be cured of a burning curse, so the tank is called Yama Theertham.

Aitihyas and storiesTradition and folklore

The steps at the entrance are said to give out musical notes when struck. Carvings on the walls include a figure that looks like an elephant from one side and a bull from the other.

PhilosophyInterpretation

The carved lives of the Nayanmars, ordinary people of every caste who reached Shiva through devotion, place the saints' stories at eye level: the temple teaches through stories as much as through ritual.

Meaning todayInterpretation

Darasuram is a favourite of art lovers and students of architecture because it is less crowded than the larger Chola temples. Its miniature carvings are a record of Chola dance, music and daily life.

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation

Documented history

Tradition

Tradition and folklore

Interpretation

Interpretation
