HistoryDocumented history
Ahichchhatra, in Bareilly district, was the ancient capital of North Panchala. Its large city mound, excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India, has remains from before the Mauryas to the Gupta period, including a big brick temple terrace.
For Jains it is the place where Parshvanatha, the 23rd tirthankara, attained omniscience. While he stood in meditation, his enemy from past lives sent storms and floods, and the serpent king Dharanendra and his queen Padmavati raised him up and spread a hood over him. The name Ahichchhatra, 'serpent canopy', is said to come from this.
The Digambar Jain tirtha near the mound is a modern complex, with a main temple of Parshvanatha and newer shrines, including a tall temple of the 24 tirthankaras.
ArchitectureDocumented history
The tirtha is a modern complex of white marble temples. The main temple of Parshvanatha stands in a courtyard, and a tall multi-storey temple of the 24 tirthankaras rises nearby.
Sthala PuranaTradition
While Parshvanatha stood in meditation, the demigod Kamatha (Meghamali), his enemy from past lives, sent storms and floods. The serpent Dharanendra and his queen Padmavati raised him up and spread a hood over him, and in that moment he became omniscient. The name Ahichchhatra, 'serpent canopy', is said to come from this.

Documented history
Documented history
Tradition
Interpretation
