Thirukurugur, now Alwarthirunagari, 'the holy town of the Alvar', is where Nammalvar was born. His four works, especially the Thiruvaimozhi, form the core of the Divya Prabandham and are called the Tamil Veda. The temple is the first of the Nava Tirupati, nine Vishnu temples along the Thamirabarani.

Brahma did penance here and Vishnu appeared to him as Adinatha, the first lord. The place is said to have been sacred before the creation of the world.

Nammalvar did not cry or feed as a baby. His parents laid him under a tamarind tree, where he sat in meditation for sixteen years. Madhurakavi, a pilgrim who saw a light shining in the south, followed it here and became his first disciple.
