The main Shiva temple of Kumbakonam, the temple town that takes its name from a pot (kumbha). Here the pot of amrita is said to have broken at the end of the great flood, and the Mahamaham festival is held every twelve years.

HistoryDocumented history

The temple has a 128-foot gopuram and a hall with 27 star and 12 zodiac signs carved in a single stone. The Mahamaham tank nearby fills with pilgrims every twelve years when Jupiter enters Leo; all the sacred rivers are believed to bathe there.

Sthala PuranaTradition

At the end of a great flood, Brahma's pot holding the seed of creation drifted here. Shiva as a hunter shot an arrow and broke it; the amrita spilled and formed the Mahamaham tank, and Shiva made a linga of the sand mixed with it.
